Jeju City Hall Restaurant Review: Hanyang, a Fine-Dining-Level Hidden Gem in Jeju City, South Korea

Raise your hand if you’ve ever spent half the day just searching for the best places to eat near Jeju City Hall. That was me too.
Then a friend asked me to come along, and that’s how I accidentally found Jeju Hanyang, tucked away in the Gwangyang alley in old Jeju’s busy downtown area.

It had that unmistakable Jeju local restaurant vibe—
the kind of place that feels like only people in the know would find it, so of course I had to go.

The moment the door opened, the whole mood changed into a quiet, calming retreat.

Even the sign at the entrance caught my eye right away. The restaurant is on the second floor, so you’ll need to head upstairs,
and the second I walked in, the soft lighting and peaceful atmosphere felt instantly soothing.
I couldn’t believe a space this quiet existed right in the middle of downtown Jeju. It absolutely earned its spot as a hidden old Jeju restaurant.

It’s just 1 minute by car from Jeju City Hall, and close enough to walk, so getting here is easy.

Jeju Hanyang: Is It Really a Western Restaurant in Jeju? It Feels Deeply Rooted in Korean Flavors

The second I saw the interior and got the menu, I was genuinely surprised.
This didn’t feel like your typical Western-style restaurant in Jeju.

From the decor to the dishes, everything had a strong Korean sensibility woven into a fusion-style dining experience.

I came because people called it one of the best Western restaurants in Jeju, but once I learned about the chef, I realized this place was on another level.
The chef is a former Chungnam national representative with 2 international competition awards and 14 domestic competition awards, so I already had a feeling the freshness and execution here would be exceptional.

Naturally, I ordered right away and got straight to the food.

Appetizer: Puffed Rice Cracker + Gim Butter

They started us off with a puffed rice cracker and gim butter—
plus a bright, tangy green onion pickle served as a side.
The puffed rice cracker wasn’t super crisp; it was actually soft and slightly moist,
and when you take a bite, it feels nostalgic in a very Korean way while still melting gently in your mouth.
And with the gim butter? Such an unexpected combo.
It wasn’t exactly my personal favorite,
but it definitely impressed me. My friend loved it, so I can see this being one of those dishes people either really love or don’t.

Their signature Hanyang Omelet is cut open right at the table, and the moment it’s sliced, the golden egg just spills out—honestly, the visual is unforgettable.
It almost looks too good to be real, but yes, it’s absolutely real.

Once you take a bite, the egg is even softer and more luscious than you’d expect, melting into your mouth with a gentle sweetness that made it impossible to stop eating.

I heard they cook the rice in a broth made with barley tea, radish, kelp, and shiitake mushrooms, and that’s when I thought, this must be the secret behind this old Jeju favorite.
And on this visit, my top pick was easily the flat iron steak and sticky corn pot rice.
At first, I only ordered it because it was one of the best-selling dishes.
But the choice-grade flat iron steak had beautiful marbling with zero off smell, and the second I scooped up a spoonful of the sizzling freshly made pot rice, I had that instant wow moment—this is what truly good rice tastes like.
The sticky corn and the aroma of perilla leaves tied everything together,
and with the pickles on the side, I finished the whole bowl in no time.

Still unfamiliar to me, but surprisingly memorable: the bell

Even the way you call the staff here was unique.
Instead of pressing a button, you ring a little handheld bell, and it almost makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another era.
Still, the staff were kind, and I loved how the interior leaned into that old Hanyang-inspired aesthetic.
On top of that, hearing about the chef’s awards and the fact that the menu changes with the seasons gave me one more reason to come back.
You can really tell the chef’s experience isn’t just for show—the freshness and polish of the food stand out right away.
If I can add one more compliment, this place feels almost like a fine-dining course experience disguised as a casual Jeju Western restaurant.
Of course, that’s just my personal take.
Still, being able to enjoy this kind of Jeju fusion meal at this price point makes it an incredible value.
They were also running a review event when I visited.
And I heard the katsu sando is amazing, so next time I’m definitely coming back and trying the review event on the spot.

A Great Spot for Important Gatherings

It also felt extra trustworthy knowing more Jeju locals than tourists seem to come here, and because the atmosphere is so cozy and polished, I could easily see this working for a family meeting, a group dinner, or a special occasion in Jeju.
I’m already planning to come back when the new seasonal menu comes out.

Getting There: Helpful Tips

If you’re taking the bus, get off at the Jeju City Hall stop heading toward Gwangyang or Ara, and it’s just a 2-minute walk.
That makes it an easy stop for both car-free travelers and Jeju locals.
There are plenty of bus options too, including routes 43-1, 212, 222, 232, and 300, so accessibility is definitely a plus.
It’s also only about 15 minutes by car from Jeju Airport, which makes it easy to fit into your Jeju travel itinerary.
If you want a relaxed meal at a quiet Jeju local restaurant, Jeju Hanyang is absolutely worth checking out.
It’s the kind of place where you can really feel the care and thoughtfulness you often get in a great Korean restaurant, so my revisit intention is basically 200%.
